We are on schedule to host the 30th annual GWN July 5th, 2020. If our event is postponed due the Covid-19 pandemic, we have booked the venue for August 9, 2020.
FRIDAY JULY 5TH – Heritage Park Pavilion in Stony Plain
5:00 pm – Expo open and package pick up begins
7:00 pm – Expo and package pick up closes
7:00 pm – Carbo Load Dinner w/ prize giveaways
8:00pm – Athlete-briefing session, athletes should attend the briefing to ensure they understand the rules and specifics of the course
CARBO LOAD DINNER
The Great White North Triathlon is renowned for it’s second to none Carbo load dinner. Join Race Director Tom Bamford for an informative and fun session. Entry into the carbo load dinner is included with your race entry. After dinner stay for a race briefing session and Q & A that will cover all aspects of the race. Please ensure that you have checked the “attending” box on your entry form to be granted entrance to the dinner.
Extra carbo load dinner tickets are available at registration for $30 each.
SATURDAY JULY 6TH
12:00pm – Expo and package pick up opens (at Heritage Park Pavilion)
12:00 pm – Mandatory bike drop off at Hubbles Lake begins
12:00 pm – Mandatory Run Bag drop off at Pavilion
4:00 pm – Expo and package pick up closes.
4:00 pm – Bike drop off closes
Bike drop off is required at T1 (Allan Beach at Hubbles Lake) on Saturday. Bikes will be secure overnight. The transition area will have security fencing and lighting and will be continuously patrolled by security guards and volunteers.
RACE DAY – SUNDAY JULY 7TH
5:30 am – Bus transportation to Hubbles Lake begins from Heritage Pavilion for HALF Athletes, buses will depart every 15 minutes until 7:00 am.
5:45 am – Transition 1 opens
6:15am – Bus transportation to Hubbles Lake begins from Heritage Pavilion for OLYMPIC Athletes, buses will depart every 15 minutes until 7:00 am.
7:15 am – Transition 1 closes for Half
7:20 am – Swim warm up closes
7:30 am – Half Race starts
8:35 am – Duathlon starts
9:00 am – Olympic Starts
9:45 am – Kids 1km Fun Run takes place
3:30 pm – Race finishes
3:30 pm – Award Dinner and Trophy presentation
There will be no body marking, please make sure your number tattoos are on before you arrive to T-1
Athletes will be transported to race start where they can drop off their T2 Run Gear Bags.
Athletes can also be dropped off at race start by friends or family, but parking at race start will be very limited.
Athletes will don their wetsuits, warm-up and perform any pre-race rituals. All athletes will be required to be out of Transition by *7:30am.
Athletes will place their pre-race clothing in their dry clothes bag and drop them with volunteers before entering the water. There will be a table for eyeglasses to be placed on the boat ramp.
The Canadian National Anthem will be sung, and the mass start will commence at the sound of the shotgun blast.
The swim course will start from the beach in the fenced off area. Swim temperatures are expected to be cool (20-22C) so full sleeve wetsuits are strongly recommended. Neoprene caps can be worn but are not required. Neoprene booties or gloves will not be allowed unless water temperatures happen to be lower than expected.
The start will be in the control of the starter who will ensure all athletes are behind the swim start to ensure a fair start. A one-minute warning will be given and a gun will be fired to start the race. The swim start line is the waters edge, but athletes can start as far back as desired. Less confident swimmers may elect to start slightly behind the masses to avoid other swimmers. The swim will be two 1km loops. Kayaks and power rescue boats will be positioned throughout the swim course in the event athletes require assistance. Scuba divers will also be positioned strategically along the swim course.
Upon completion of the swim, all athletes will exit and proceed up the beach and over the timing mat. Wetsuit strippers will be on hand on the grass.
After wetsuit stripping proceed directly to your bike where you will have left your bike gear. Athletes will then put on their bike gear and pack their wetsuit and other swim gear into their T1 bags.
Volunteers will be on hand to assist. No private change tents will be available at T1. T1 (swim gear) and dry clothes bags will be transported to T2 for pick-up after the race.
Medical personnel will be on hand in case of any emergencies.
Athletes will pick up their bike from the rack and proceed on foot to the mount line. Volunteers and race officials will be present at the mount line to ensure all athletes have their helmets on and chin straps attached to ensure a safe and fair bike start.
There will be a large number of race officials on the course who will STRICTLY apply all rules. Drafting is expressly prohibited and WILL BE closely monitored and enforced on this course. Athletes must ride on the right and pass on the left. In addition, we will have a ZERO tolerance for any safety-related infractions. These violations will result in the athlete’s immediate removal from the competition.
All rules will be clearly described in the athlete briefing sessions.
The bike course has one left turn and some busy intersections. These areas will have officials, and in some cases, police officers prominently positioned. Athletes must obey race officials and police at all times and especially in these areas to ensure our race is safe.
There will be aid stations every 15km on the bike.These stations will supply water as well as Electrolyte drink and Gels. Athletes will be able to dispose of empty water bottles and garbage at the aid station. Littering on course will not be tolerated.
Local bike shops will also provide mechanical support on the course. Several support vehicles and a sag wagon to pick up athletes who do not complete the bike will be on course. Although there will be numerous mechanical support vehicles, athletes are encouraged to have sufficient equipment to address any minor mechanical issues (such as flats) as support may not be on-hand when you need them.
Athletes will proceed along the course as outlined on the maps on the website. There will be distance signage at 15 km intervals. The bike course ends at Stony Plain Heritage Pavilion. Volunteers will be on-hand at the dismount to assist you in dismounting but you will rack your own bike in the appropriately numbered rack in T2.
Athletes will rack their own bikes and T2 bags will have been positioned at your bike number. Removed bike clothing will be placed in the T2 bags. Volunteers will be on-hand to assist. Athletes will proceed to the run course. An aid station, medical tent, and washroom will be available in T2.
The run will progress on roads and pathways within Stony Plain and around tit’s trail system. Not all roads are traffic free so please be aware of your surroundings and listen carefully to all marshalls.The run course will have distance signs posted every kilometre and aid stations positioned approximately every 2km. The aid stations will provide water, Electrolyte Drink & gels and other assistance. There are a total of 10 aid stations.
The finish line will be located in front of The Stony Plain Pavilion near T2. The finish line will have a clock displaying the total time from the start.
Smile as you cross the finish line because you have just had a great race and you are on camera. Volunteers will be holding a finish line tape for you to cross.
After you cross the finish line volunteers will be available to assist you.
Recovery food and drinks will be available immediately after you finish the race. You will be able to collect your bike, T1 (swim gear) bag, T2 (Bike gear) bag and dry clothes bag from T2.
An awards ceremony and hamburger meal will be held in the arena after the race (anticipated start time of 3:30 pm). Athletes can then leave at their leisure.
