Chinook Classic Triathlon History
The Chinook Triathlon was founded by race director extraordinaire Mike Bock in 2004. Having raced every event in Western Canada through the ’80’s-’90’s, Mike wanted to offer Calgary it’s very own Half Distance long course triathlon. Mike, his family and amazing team of volunteers grew the event from a grass-roots triathlon to hosting several Provincial Championships through it’s first fourteen years. The event has generated over $150,000 for local athlete development charities.
The event was purchased in 2018 by Tom Bamford of Platinum Racing. Tom fell in love with the sport as a teenager, entering his first race in 1989. The former race director of the 1994 National Championships he looks forward to book-ending a successful career in the software industry with producing world-class multi-sport events for all ages and abilities. As an age-group athlete Tom has raced at the World Championship level for ITU Long Course, XTERRA off-road, Ironman 70.3 and full Ironman distances. He has ripped up the Chinook Half & Olympic courses several times and will have to settle for his race-best 4th place finish now that his energies are focused on delivering athletes a “breath-taking” experience of their own. Clever escape for an aging triathlete.
